A fictional character referred to as master of wits and wisdom. He is popularly called the half-man because he is a dwarf. His real name is Peter Drinklage.
In the epic fantasy series, A Song Of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin (Its television adaptation is HBO’s award-winning Game Of Thrones), Tyrion was the last child of Tywin Lannister, the lord of the House of Lannister and Warden of the west. House of Lannister was one of the great houses of Westeros and had its seat in Casterly Rock.
Peter drinklage is a 48year old outstanding American actor and producer, and perhaps we may not know this, he is one of the highest paid actors on television – according to Wikipedia, and most strikingly he is a dwarf, his own form of dwarfism is termed Achondoplasia—a skeletal dysplastic condition.
What Makes Achondoplasia Different From Other Types?
Achondoplasia is the most common form of dwarfism (about 70%). It is classified under a group of dwarfism called Disproportionate dwarfism, meaning a person with Achondoplasia usually have average sized trunk and large forehead, however the upper and lower limbs are short. The other group is growth hormone deficiency, here the whole body parts are small sized in the same proportion. This type is usually caused by the deficiency of an hormone secreted by anterior pituitary gland in the brain called growth hormone.
What Are The Causes Of Dwarfism?
A. Depending on the type. The group with extreme shortness but proportional body parts usually has a hormonal cause, such as growth-hormone deficiency, once called pituitary dwarfism.
B. The Other group with disproportionate shortness is usually caused by genetic mutation. Peter Drinklage’s condition, Achondoplasia falls in this group and it’s usually caused by mutation on chromosome 4.
Can A Person With Dwarfism Give Birth To Normal body size children?
Did you know that Peter Drinklage is the only dwarf in his family? Father, mother, brother and his daughter are all of normal body sizes! In other words, research has never inferred that a dwarf daddy or mommy must give birth to a dwarf son or daughter, however research has shown that there is a 25% chance that a child born to a couple in which both members have achondroplasia will be of normal height. But there is also a 25% chance the child will inherit both dwarfism genes, a condition known as double-dominant syndrome. This is a fatal condition that usually results in miscarriage. Often parents of children with achondroplasia do not carry the mutated gene themselves. The mutation in the child occurs spontaneously at the time of conception.
Are Dwarfs Smarter Than Normal size people?
In the book, A Song Of Ice and Fire, the author painted Tyrion, Peter Drinklage as a very wise man with I.Q almost incomparable with others. He was acting Hand of the king in place of his father when Tywin went to war. After killing his father in a ‘much needed’ plot to escape an unfair death punishment, he ran into exile and used his talent to impress Daenerys Targaryen of the house of Targaryen, another powerful house with heir to the Iron throne, thus becoming her hand. So, perhaps the author created his character based on some scientific findings, but then there hasn’t being any established work to show any direct relationship between dwarfism and I.Q, however problems causing dwarfism during conception may also affect brain development.
What Are The Health Challenges In Dwarfism?
1. They may experience joint pain caused by abnormal bone alignment, or from nerve compression.
2. Early degenerative joint disease, exaggerated lordosis or scoliosis, and constriction of spinal cord or nerve roots can cause pain and disability.
3. Reduced thoracic size can restrict lung growth and reduce pulmonary function.
4. Some forms of dwarfism are associated with disordered function of other organs, such as the brain or liver, sometimes severe enough to be more of an impairment than the unusual bone growth.
What Are The Ways To Cope With The Stigma Attached To Dwarfism?
1. First, one needs to understand his or her body condition
2. More often than not stigmatisation would come but one needs to develop strong character and ignore them
3. Family and friends’ support is very paramount
4. Social welfare support for those who are not privileged to have strong family support
5. Psychological support for those that might have developed low self esteem, anxiety disorders and even depressive episode.
